GENOME T-SHIRT

At the end of each year, Science magazine presents its "breakthrough of the year" - the most important bit of research or trend that year. In 2007 we featured human genetic variation as the breakthrough, as personal genomics - having one's own genome sequenced for a reasonable fee - was a new concept.

The breakthrough that year was all about democratizing genomics, and we thought jeans and a t-shirt represented the "everyman" who would soon have access their genome via companies like 23andme.

We worked with artist Joe Zeff to create a photo-illustration of the human genome map on a t-shirt. (We used Figure 1 from the landmark Human Genome paper - it is real data.)

We received such tremendous feedback from the cover that we made an actual shirt, which won an award from the Art Directors Club.
